Авиационная и космическая промышленность требует применения высокотехнологичных материалов. Во многих случаях пластмассы заменяют такие классические металлы, как сталь и алюминий. Композиционные материалы обеспечивают здесь существенное преимущество в весе при равных или более высоких прочностных характеристиках. Для смол, используемых в качестве связующего, также требуются разделительные материалы.
Требования к разделительным материалам аналогичны тем, что предъявляются в автомобильной промышленности. В особенности качество поверхности деталей, расположенных снаружи самолёта, должно быть безупречно. Неровности представляют собой слабые места, которые могут повлечь за собой более серьёзные неполадки. Обработка поверхностей (лакировка, поверхностные покрытия) возможна без дальнейшей обработки.
